วรรณยุกต์ หมายถึง เครื่องหมายที่แสดงเสียงสูง ต่ำ ของคำในภาษาไทย มี 4 รูป คือ

Thai has five tones.
ภาษาไทยมีวรรณยุกต์ 5 เสียง
เสียงสามัญ = the flat tone, the middle tone
This tone stays flat throughout. Sometimes it drops down at the end just a little bit.
เสียงเอก = the down tone, the low tone
This tone starts low and stays low or goes even lower.
เสียงโท = the falling tone, the mountain tone
This tone starts high and then comes down.
เสียงตรี = the high tone, the up tone
This tone starts high and keeps going up higher.
เสียงจัตวา = the rising tone, the valley tone
This tone starts low or at the mid tone and then comes up at the end.
